CATS are the #1 killer of birds and you let yours out to kill and further reduce the dwindling population of song birds in America.
Do you put up bird feeders too?
River who keeps his cat inside and feeds the song birds, friend of both.

Cats miss their people too.
My older brother was not close to the cat. I was. He went off to Europe for a year and when he returned the ole cat would not leave him alone. Being on a different clock he tried to sleep that afternoon and the cat kept getting all over him. There was no doubt.
Decades ago, my cat Ruth was reported by a girl friend to get all excited when I was about 30 minutes away from getting home.
No doubt, cats miss their people, they are just not as demonstrative as slobbering canines.

Years ago I had a black cat named Bolderdash, he would wait at the curb for me to get home, when I would get up to him I would tap my chest and he would jump up into my arms. He like my cat Rupert are just as happy to see me when I have been out as the dog, just as demonstrative as moi says.

We have a cat that hangs out with the 6 dogs, yes, the 2 pit bulls, too. The biggest Pit bull and the cat sit on the couch together and lick each others faces.

What's the Kitty news?
:kittygray OFBK sleeps. No rats for over a month that I know of. Chased a grasshopper yesterday.
She Lives ! And sleeps with eating and bodily functions in between naps. Atkins helps her not get fatter. Friskies canned food.
Solly, the big brother sleeps. He eats tons and keeps growing. Not fat. Big.
Mostly Science Diet kibble. Gets fart on canned food. That creates a struggle.
Izzy, the little brother sleeps. Picky eater. Thin and small. Sometimes gets a treat of a little Friskies canned cat food. Otherwise it is Science Diet kibble because Izzy is a stone former.
Wellness created the stones. Nutro and Science Diet has maintain freedom from stones 10+ years.
When it comes to kitty treats, only two of three like any one treat.
They all have their own brand of "love time". Solly being the most like a puppy dog. Izzy for short moments and a few minutes when I get into bed he curls up like in an arm pit for a short nap.
OFBK shows stomach when outside and wanting love time but inside paces around me until I understand that is her inside signal. I make it a point to give each cat, personal time, every day.
I didn't want a cat because I know how connected I get with them. My wife did.
No wife now for over 5 years, and still I have three cats.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Flip and Flop, both currently asleep at the end of my bed-they're graciously sharing with me. What is of concern is that...I'm old and wearing out fast. It's difficult to imagine their being left to someone to take care of. Many have said that they love the pair-they were litter mates and are almost too accustomed to being handled-but....as comforting as that is, and I've prepared a stipend to care for them, it's a concern. Equally, were they to die I'd want a new one or two (I've had a pair, always with the same name) but then I know I'm facing leaving them to fate and others. We become stupidly attached to our "companion animals" and as we age the issue intensifies. While I am not moved to become "that weird old man with alllll those cats" I can somewhat identify with why people come to that. While it's the extreme cases we see televised, whether you are obsessed or not depends upon a mental dynamic as much as the number in your home. My father used to say that "One animal was a pet, two was a menagerie" and promptly kept his hunting dogs in the house, my mother had a lap dog and my sister had a mutt she was given "as a present" by someone who apparently did not like our family. Being a cat person, I was pet-less until I set up my own establishment and, once again, had a Flip and a Flop.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
I have both, Rupert the Cat and Nelly the Dog they get along well and sleep next to each other on the bed when I let them, or share a chair or pull the blanket to the floor and each take an end. They are the same size and weigh about the same and are a few months different in age. However the cat is showing his years were the dog is still in puppy stage.
I am hoping I out live them but my son will take them if I don't but I am not sure I would get another cat or dog when they go. I must think about that one, maybe a dog and talking bird of some sort, with my luck the bird would learn how to meow just like the cat and bark like the dog.
Fish, yes more fish.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
There is one cat here.
Four dogs live here, although only 2 are ours, and 1 mine. Yet I end up caring for all 4.
From 2 neighbors, 2 dogs have moved in.
The poor cat next door is quite neurotic.

Do you remember the scene from the movie THE GREAT RACE" with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon where they all run into a large bakery making cakes and cream pies and everything frosted and gooey for the coronation of the king? AND, the fake king says "hit me!"
The cat living next door to you is neurotic, you say...
I think that other link is missing the sound[

Considering
After a friend of mine tanked himself in a gym swimming pool and his estate went wild,
I did my "trust".
A caretaker is arranged for any pets that out live me and 10% comes off the top of the estate to her for perpetual pet care. I do trust that person. Her uncle, my best friend is a major recipient and if he is not around it is her and her cousins. My friend did his trust and likewise his nieces get it all.
40 Acres of irrigated ranch land just below Sequoia National Park + money from estates.
