Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Recipe for an "interesting night":
1. Cat, with strong hunters instinct - 1 pcs.
2. Table with more than a few electronic parts, sorted in heaps, and left till morning.
3. Lamp over the table.
Mix well and add 1 moth. Then watch for the resulting chaos. Decat the table. Repeat as necessary.
Try to catch the moth instead of the cat. Switch off the light and get a proof that cats do see in dim light.
PS. In cat's defence - all parts were still on the table after that...

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Thank you fhunter, we were thinking about you today at the MOM,
As the day is coming to a close, I look down beside me to the basket were my dog sleeps and both the dog and Rupert are in it asleep. Its time like this I wish I had a camera.

RiverI do not know if I deserve this...
As for the cat and dog sleeping together, I have heard of this, but never seen.

As for the cat and dog sleeping together, I have heard of this, but never seen.
As a kid I knew a big slobbering boxer and cat lived at my friend's house. The dog carried the cat like a kitten and they were pals. The dog died and the cat stopped eating. So another dog was found, more of a hound as I remember and the cat taught it to do the same companion games. That dog was hit by a car. The cat went on a hunger strike again and trained a third dog.
I knew a dog and a cat that were not at all friends except in the coldest night when it was adventitious to sleep together.
I knew one cat, Figaro who pretty well ran rough shod on the 4-5 times heavier dog, Maggie. Figaro liked to sit at the bottom of the stairs when Maggie was upstairs and challenge Maggie to pass by. Maggie would whimper.
I have never known a cat / dog relationship where the cat was submissive.
I have not seen the old, friendly Orange Kitty for some time. Maybe he was dropping by to thank me for feeding his Junior. The scardy, feral, Orange Kitty comes by twice a day for feeding. Has taken to adopting the front door walk and of course I do not want to disturb it. <He knows, and does it anyway> In an effort to civilize him I steer a course around him. And let him know. Old Fat Black Kitty seems to be peaceable with Orange Kitty when in yard space. But, apparently they are fighting for the same hunting territory. At first Black Kitty won but then Orange Kitty became dominant. I hear the cat fight. Call in Black Kitty who comes with a skulking tail down posture. In a few minutes, Orange Kitty appears at front door walk way. This routine has happened twice lately.
So while Orange Kitty sat in the front yard near the house, I went to the other side of the front yard and started to talk to Orange Kitty about being nice to Old Black Kitty. (Yes taking to a cat does sometimes work, if they choose) As I was talking and Orange Kitty made Kitty Eyes at me, two ruddy - reddish brown yellow squirrels popped out of the bushes behind me. The chirpped between one another running circles between Orange Kitty and I, one or the other exploring an escape and coming back to the circle running, finally discovering the big pine tree as an exit strategy. A few hours later I saw Orange Kitty, who sat still for the event, come back and sniff out with dropped jaw the squirrel run area.
Life with the Siamese brothers remains relatively uneventful.

LOL it was two responses in one post,
My cat, Rupert as seen in my avatar is about 18lbs, my dog Nelly is about 8lbs. her basket is next to me and Rupert usually gets on my desk above her so he can be next to me as well. The other day and its happened a few times now, Rupert will get into the box with Nelly and lie down with her. Its fun to watch.
Yes, we have two dogs the other one is a big dog about 65lbs, Rupert is the boss make no mistake about that. One day Rupert was running down the hall and big dog decided it was a good thing and decided to chase him, Rupert turned stood on his hind legs lifted his right paw over his head with claws out ready to let the dog have it then with his left paw with the claws out raked it across the dogs nose. Poor dog never saw it coming.
Yes Rupert is the boss, he has staff, two dogs, two humans.

RiverI have seen a cat defending it's fish from the dog the same way: stand on hind legs, and use both front paws. Cat and dog were of similar size, do I need to say, that the dog was shocked?
PS. As for cats -this (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HqeX ... .18.47.jpg) is Zuhel, our cat. This (https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1orJ ... .57.23.jpg) one is unbrushed, after a bad hair day. For the cat's size - one tile is 1ft x 1ft.

fhunter, have you seen this unfair match up between a cat and a bear?
I wonder why some of our neighborhood cats are not more successful against the coyote.

Re: What is it about, Cats ?
Several years ago I had a friend who raised Irish Wolfhounds, the World's tallest dogs, here in the Northwest. In the spring, while the ground was still damp, the dogs would find the sunny spots and just flop down. Their cat, however, did not like to lay on the damp, so he would wait till the dogs settled down, then would hop on one of their deep, flat sided chest, curl up on the cozy spot, look very pleased with himself and purr. The dogs, anyone of which could have snapped him in half with a single bite (they were bred to be able to outrun, bring down and kill wolves) were very respectful of that cat. They moved very gingerly around him.

Feral, Orange Kitty has lately been schmoozing with Black Kitty and Izzy, the smaller of two indoor Siamese cats since my talk with Orange Kitty mentioned above.
Cats schmoozing? When they sit a few feet from one another, or lay down, front paws curled under more relaxed then front paws Spinx style. They start staring at one another, expressing relaxed body language and eventually point away from each other until meal time. I watched it for a few hours and left them alone to be cats. They did know I was watching.
I know Black Kitty likes cat schmoozing because years ago when I became her fifth home in the 'hood, I was calling her in at sunset. She and two other cats came off a hill to a sidewalk then each paused at the sidewalk and went their separate direction.
It was fun to watch them be cool with one another and not interfere.
The idea of the solitary, non communicative house cat is just so full of manure.
I talked to Orange Kitty and he responded.
I have taught neighbors to be cat whisperers. Like when they walks by, and hits you on the leg with their tail, say something nice.
That tail touch is cat talk. Body language and vocal.

Cats are all unique domestic animals... One should not forget that, yes you may somehow own a dog but you can never ever own a cat, only you can think that you own a cat if it gives permission to you to feel that way...Cats own the owners not vice versa
