I don't know how MAC's work as far as disk naming, etc., but on a PC, the operating system is usually stored on the C: or main hard drive. I NEVER keep anything of value on the C: drive. I learned a long time ago that another internal hard drive, or an external USB one, were the safest places to keep things. If the new one only has one hard drive, I'd suggest you store the goodies not on the Desktop, but in a folder somewhere else on the hard drive like "Downloads". When an OS goes, Desktop is usually the first thing to go with it and not come back on a reinstall.

Update: Ken delivers my new iMac Saturday already password encoded. I have an External Hard Drive so I'm hoping, what I lost will be on there. If not, I begin anew

For future, consider using on-line back-up services like Mozy or Carbonite. All files you designate (not OS) are automatically backed up to a remote storage facility, and can be restored to your computer whenever you wish. Mozy offers up to 2GB free. If you need more than that, $4.95 per month. Well worth it, in addition to an external hard drive. I don't save movies, TV shows, etc., so I'm only up to about 29% of Mozy's free service.

Ken_SD delivered the new computer I purchased and it works great.

Even better, I hooked up my External HD and it had everything on I had lost.
