Taiwanese student charged with castrating man in home

Shuo-Shan Wang, 29, pleaded not guilty and was released on $25,000 bond after agreeing to pledge his Oak Park home as surety.
Wearing a blue striped shirt and tan slacks, Wang said nothing during the arraignment.
Wang, from Taiwan, has been in the country on a student visa that expired a year ago.
The brief arraignment in Oak Park District Court focused more on whether Wang should be released on bail, in light of the expired visa.
"He's here on an expired visa," said Detective Maureen Bergman of the Oak Park Police Department. "It's been expired for about a year."
Wang's attorney, Steve Reina, argued Wang was not a risk of flight because of the home he owns, because he turned himself in to face arraignment and because he has no criminal history.
"He's not interested in running," Reina said. "He's interested in facing the charges."
Judge Marvin Frankel released Wang after he agreed to pledge his house as security. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Sept. 3.

is a four-year felony. Unlawfully dispensing prescription medicine is a 90-day misdemeanor.
Prosecutors say emergency medical personnel were called to Wang's Oak Park address June 8 after neighbor reported seeing a 48-year-old man bleeding in the street. The man was taken to Providence Hospital where emergency surgery was performed following the removal of his testicles.
Prosecutors allege the man found Wang while searching the Internet for someone to perform a castration on him. Police say Wang performed the castration on his dining room table.
