WASHINGTON – Al-Qaida announced Monday that its No. 3 official, Mustafa (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_al_qaida_believed_killed#) al-Yazid, had been killed along with members of his family — perhaps one of the most severe blows to the terror movement since the U.S. campaign against al-Qaida began. A U.S. official said al-Yazid was believed to have died in a U.S. missile strike.

A statement posted on an al-Qaida Website said al-Yazid, which it described as the organization's top commander in Afghanistan (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_al_qaida_believed_killed#), was killed along with his wife, three daughters, a grandchild and other men, women and children but did not say how or where.

The statement did not give an exact date for al-Yazid's death, but it was dated by the Islamic calendar month of "Jemadi al-Akhar," which falls in May.

A U.S. official in Washington (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_al_qaida_believed_killed#) said word was "spreading in extremist circles" of his death in Pakistan's tribal areas in the past two weeks.

His death would be a major blow to al-Qaida, which in December "lost both its internal and external operations chiefs," the official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_al_qaida_believed_killed#).

The Egyptian-born al-Yazid, also known as Sheik Saeed al-Masri, was a founding member of al-Qaida and the group's prime conduit to Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri. He was key to day-to-day control, with a hand in everything from finances to operational planning, the U.S. official said.

Al-Yazid has been reported killed before, in 2008, but this is the first time his death has been acknowledged by the militant group on the Internet.

Its about time, him and his family, I like it. Of course now they will need to avenge his wrongful death.

You know stop using oil let these sand lizards go back under the rock they they live under, never to be seen again.

The problem is that there we are in a "Hydra" situation." If you remember your mythology, when Heracles fought the Hydra, every time he cut off one of its heads, two immediately sprung up in its place, and he found himself fighting twice as many. Israel has been in such a position for quite a while now, every Palestinian terrorist they kill, creates twice as many willing to become suicide bombers. So they chop off more heads and create twice as many enemies. Not a strategy that has much long term chance of success, particularly in the face of the Palestinian birth rate. This is not a battle that will be won with overwhelming military muscle. We originally paid lip service to "winning the hearts and minds," but it's been a long time since any one even mentioned it. A few years ago the democratic senator from Colorado, Pat Schroeder, was practically crusified for asking why Osama was the most popular name for infant boys in a large part of the Islamic world, and if we could learn anything from that. Unless we can ask and answer such questions we are doomed to ultimate failure in that region. At this point in the twenty-first century, we are not going to be able to bomb them back into the stone age, no matter haw many neocons would like to.

If we have access to their bodies, they could be soaked in pig's blood.

I like it.
