At the first midwest MoM (we didn't call it MoM then), about 8 years ago, the dainty sister let rip the very silent, deadly, green fog retort. Talula nearly banned me on the spot, River's hair fell out, Paolo almost fainted, and I about died laughing, at first, then even I took off running.... Farts are funny even when deadly - I still crack up over the scene - the stunned disbelief, then the panic....

As I recall, it was December 2001. Bboy had to go out and use his inhaler, and Gem nearly had to be taken to the ER! Talula was raving about it as late as the 23rd, when I had to leave.

Actually, it was at the campground in front of Robby's RV when we were visiting you. But I like your version better.

I got invited to a beauty contest in Peru once. We were down very near the center and the auditorium was packed. At one point the thought actually occurred to me looking around that this is how people die in the stampede if something like a fire happens. Sure as shit (sorry), some half comatose drunk cut one of those silent but deadly ones. You could watch the wave of revulsion spreading outwards from the epicenter. Women were holding their scarfs and jackets to their noses and trying unsuccessfully not to laugh. Just proves that it is funny everywhere.

My theory is that the undignified accident is funny as an afront to human dignity. And is there any sound or smell more undignified that a memorable fart?

And we should not forget that part of the 1001 tales of the Arabian Nights included one report of one Abu Hasan, who cracked one off at a dinner party and exiled himself from the embarrassment.

I know a lot of people THINK that pinto beans or fresh brocolli is the sure fire fart maker... But IF you actually WANT to fart the worst worst WORST smelling farts and farts a plenty, then I suggest a delicious little snack that I personally (and unfortunately) LOVE: "sushi nori" - that is dried seaweed paper that is delicately roasted and salted.

I absolutely LOVE the taste of it, to me, it tastes like grilled swordfish steaks made into a light and dry "jerky" or potato chip like snack. IF I let myself, I could eat it by the pound. It really does taste good, it is VERY high in B-vitamins... but unfortunately, it sort of lubricates the digestive system a little bit too much. You remember that thing about "NEVER TRUST A FART" right? Well that really is important to remember when you eat a bunch of sushi nori.

A few hours after eating sushi nori, the gas comes, and it comes in MASSIVE AMMOUNTS! And it SMELLS VERY VERY VERY BAD! I smells sort of like a bunch of dead rotting fish, and low tide on the bay.

I remember that first MOM, there were 6 of us, it was hotter then hell and we were in the sun, no shade, the showers were cleaned sometime right after WWI, give or take a year and all in all it was a great weekend. Labor day weekend 2002. I went to Kimmel the following week.

Yeah, yeah. But there are times when you really need to hold back. Job interviews for example or meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time.

When I really wanted to know is what happens to the gas when you clench tight and hold on to it. After a while the pressure eases. Has the gas leaked out? Or has it moved back up the colon to emerge later?

Are there any harmful consequences of not letting go, bearing in mind the epitaph I once saw on an ancient grave in a country churchyard:

Where e’er you be

let your wind go free.

Cos that was the cause

of the death of me.

Leaves open the question, was the death of him because he let it free, and some one got him? Or did it roll up his spine and cause a brain fart?

it has been suggested by some members of the medical profession that one cause of diverticulitis is the failure to release gas, thereby causing the 'blow-out' in the wall of the intestine (similar to that nasty 'bubble' car tires get).
