Turning dogs gay
Does anyone really believe that castrating a dog will make him gay?
Gay dogs not welcome,
diner in South Australia told
By Sarah Mennie
From: Sunday Mail (SA)
April 25, 2010
A RESTAURANT in a northwest suburb of Adelaide that refused a blind man entry because it thought his guide dog was "gay" was ordered by the Equal Opportunity Tribunal to pay him $1500.
The (Adelaide) Sunday Mail said Ian Jolly, 57, was barred from dining at the Thai Spice restaurant in May 2009 after a staff member mistook his guide dog Nudge for a "gay dog," a tribunal heard this week.
A statement given by restaurant owners Hong Hoa Thi To and Anh Hoang Le said one of the restaurant's waiters said that Mr Jolly's partner Ms Chris Lawrence stated "she wanted to bring a gay dog into the restaurant."
Mr Jolly and Ms Lawrence were refused entry to the restaurant - which displays a "guide dogs welcome" sign - even after providing staff with a guide dogs fact card.
At an Equal Opportunity Tribunal conciliation hearing on Friday, the restaurant agreed to provide Mr Jolly with a written apology and attend an Equal Opportunity education course, in addition to paying him $1500
"The staff genuinely believed that Nudge was an ordinary pet dog which had been desexed to become a gay dog," a statement from the hearing said.
Mr Jolly said while he was happy with the result, the embarrassing incident had dampened his enthusiasm for eating out at restaurants. "It gives you some comfort that Equal Opportunity is there," he said.
"But I always have that fear now, when I go out.
"I just want to be like everybody else and be able to go out for dinner, to be left alone and just enjoy a meal."
Thai Spice refused to speak to the Sunday Mail when contacted for comment.

Oh HELL!, Jesus...
Don't you know...?
They just wanted to COOK him. Hung Su Canine Chicken. Order it next time you are out?
Beware of that "Eastern Flu" that you sometimes catch in these restaurants... You know, the overwhelming desire to eat fried rice and little black dog...
Golly, what an ethnically cruel joke... Can't believe I told it... Gotta stop hanging out with the Tea Party crowd...

Re: Turning dogs gay
HAH! As is always the case, the left leaning media has failed to report all the facts...(HEY! Those "italic" fonts here only lean to the right! That seems very unfair!)

The dog in question was clearly and provocatively swishing as he pranced around the other dogs, and "the way he was dressed he was asking for it!"
OMG! I am constantly amazed at some people... a "gay" dog?!?
The sad truth of it is... The restaurant now has to pay $1,500 because of the stupidity and ignorance of one of their employees.
Serious question here: IF, you owned a restaurant, and one of your otherwise good, hard-working and long time employees displayed this sort of ignorance and stupidity, what would you do?
My own first impulse would be to fire them on the spot, and tell them that even blind and gay people have money, which any restaurant owner wants them to spend in their establishment... ergo make all possible accommodations available and make more money... But then, IF the idiot waiter, waitress, or maitre'de was otherwise a good employee... is it worth it to try to educate such people? Or should you just dump them and hope they hire on with one of your competitors?

Re: Turning dogs gay
I laughed about this for hours. It's such a funny story.
But Seriously:
I jsut finished reading a non-fiction book about culture clash titled "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures" by Anne Fadiman. I recommend the book. It is amazing how western and Hmong Cultures clash so amazingly awful.
That being said, the Hmong sacrifice animals -- pigs and chickens. ANd some of them eat dog and cat or know orientals who do... All of this is not considered unusual in Thailand and I can just see some porr Thai lady who is acting as maitre'de or hostess hearing a thick, Australian accent changing "guide" to "gay" ... And taking the misheard, poorly said accent as Gospel truth.
It's not ignorance. It's Culture clash.
It's funny. It's a minor tragedy. But it's not deliberately mean and nasty.

And remember that "gay" in 'Strine is pronounced the same as "guy" in North American. "Gay" and "guide" are very close....

Re: Turning dogs gay
I think it's interesting that their frame of reference for a gay dog isn't one that is homosexual, but rather one that had been "Desexed"... since homosexuals are apparently all eunuchs, effeminite, etc..

Re: Turning dogs gay
The "Big Gay Al" episode of South Park sprang immediately to my mind.
OK, so the restaurant owners are a bit clueless at best and a bit jerkish at worst...but an equal opportunity tribunal? This makes my neck hairs stand on end.

Stand on end? Why? Don't gay dogs have rights too?
