Now that that's over, please try to keep this thread off reality and onto Science Fiction
Karl's parody of an economist was hilarious; and his theories of "the dialectic of history" are certainly in the realm of science fiction, well fiction at any rate.
50s stuff was just too kitsch for me. I didn't really get into science fiction proper till one fine day when I was about 10 and caught a re-run of Return of the Jedi on TV.
The way the universe was gungy and not all shiny ships completely won me over, and for many years I was a very staunch Star Wars only fan, thinking Star Trek to be quite laughable. It wasn't till I caught an episode of DS9, that I begun getting into Star Trek. I guess it's no coincidence that from TNG onwards Industrial Light and Magic (ILM)'s involvement in the Star Trek franchise steadily increased.
My current sci-fi universes that completely rock my boat are (in order of preference) Star Wars, Star Trek, Battletech/Mechwarrior, Warhammer 40K. I'd count the Gundam series as well, but they're technically many different universes under one franchise, while Ghost in the Shell is what I consider to be more cyber-punk than outright sci-fi.
50's sci fi was about fear of the unknown from outer space, fear of the effects of radiation, fear of those new-fangled computer things, and fear of communist takeover.
Sci Fi mirrors society's fears and forces us to confront them.
