US High School Spies on Kids via Laptops

Thoughts? I think I'd have to beat the principal to death.🍑👋

In short, the webcams could be remotely activated, and "Big Brother" could watch what was in range of the laptop -including students in "various stages of dress or undress."

Odd that this is on the BBC and not on any of my US news pages headlines.

US school accused of web spying

By Angela Harrison

BBC News education reporter

Parents in the US have accused a school of spying on children by remotely activating webcams on laptops.

A couple from Pennsylvania have filed a lawsuit against a school district which gave laptops to its high school pupils.

They say their son was told off by teachers for "engaging in improper behaviour in his home" and that the evidence was an image from his webcam.

Lower Merion School District says it has now deactivated a tracking device installed on the laptops.

It says the security feature was only used to track lost, stolen and missing laptops.

But it was deactivated on Thursday and would not be re-instated without informing students and families, the district said.

'Stages of undress'

The Lower Merion School District gave the laptops to all 1,800 students at its two high schools with the aim of giving them access to school resources around the clock, according to its website.

Michael and Holly Robbins are suing the district on behalf of their child and all the children in the district issued with the laptops.

They allege the school district invaded their privacy and are guilty of "wiretapping" by putting children under covert surveillance.

“ Images captured may consist of minors and their parents or friends in compromising or embarrassing positions, including in various stages of dress or undress ”

Lawsuit claims

In their lawsuit, they claim the webcams were activated remotely and images were taken which could have included anything going on in a room where the laptop was placed.

The legal papers say: "As the laptops were routinely used by students and family members at home, it is believed that many of the images captured and intercepted may consist of images of minors and their parents or friends in compromising or embarrassing positions, including in various stages of dress or undress".

On Thursday, the Lower Merion School District posted a letter to parents on its website saying it had always "gone to great lengths" to protect the privacy of its students.

In it, the Schools Superintendent Christopher McGinley gives details of the security feature, which he said was activated only if a laptop was reported lost, stolen or missing.

"The security feature's capabilities were limited to taking a still image of the operator and the operator's screen," he wrote.

"This feature was only used for the narrow purpose of locating a lost, stolen or missing laptop. The District never activated the security feature for any other purpose or in any other manner whatsoever."

However, the district had carried out a preliminary review of security procedures and had disabled the security-tracking program, he added.

The district would now conduct a thorough review of the existing policies for student laptop use and look at any other "technology areas in which the intersection of privacy and security may come into play".

"We regret if this situation has caused any concern or inconvenience among our students and families, " he said.

First: I am not surprised. Next: I am under the impression that that this is a common feature of laptops owned by businesses, government agencies and institutions that are loaned to others. I am sure I have heard of arrests and prosecutions of thieves and recovery of laptops using this technique. Last: It could be difficult to prove that this is a violation of anyone's privacy unless they were foolish enough to make and save images of an private nature. keep in mind that, for instance, an employer has access to anything one does with equipment they supply even if done on personal time at non-work locations. Ah, privacy, a dim, distant, nostalgic memory. --FLO--

Doesn't surprise me one bit. If the area I lived at had the money they'd probably do it from elementary to high school. Hell cops around here get charged with child molest and crap like that.

Doesn't surprise me.

Best answer to this would be to accuse whoever was responsible with distribution/acquiring child porn. (Do I understand correctly that high school ages are between 13-18?)

With modern laws and attitudes... Or am I too cruel?

PS. Webcam usually has indicator, showing that it is recording...

Judging from most people I've met on the Internet, I would have thought most '18 year old' guys were really age 54 and really fat. I bet these guys were REALLY in for a visual treat then. :-\

That's a stab from the past...

In the early days of the internet (Especially with AOL) the joke was that a picture "25 and just our of the Navy" was good for at least 25 years before it turned into an actual lie about the subject's age.

You'd see these personal ads with the note "This is my Picture from a few years ago" and that meant either a) before I gained so much weight I remind people of the3 goodyear blimp, b) before gray hair, c) like two decades ago.

A number of school administrators in Pennsylvania have found junior high school and high school students sending nude and semi-nude photos of themselves to OTHER MINORS on their cellphones while in school. These CHILDREN have been prosecuted as sex offenders for distribution of child pornography in the form of photographs of themselves.

How much more serious is it for school administrators to be spying on children these same ages in their bedrooms?

Prosecution of the administrators for child pornography might lead to consideration of a more logical approach toward the children.

I'd like to see the Admins busted for it.

If they want to give out laptops, there should have been some kind of financial agreement, or security deposit - not using the cam to spy on the kids. With GPS what it is now (My new Nikon camera records GPS into image headers!) they could have used that if they were worried about them being stolen.

My last job they gave me a lap top, I never took it home, ever.

As for this school board, somebody is going to get fired.

As for who you are or as you say who you are on the internet.

For those of you who come to the MOM events know if I say I am 40+ tall and good looking would know that I am full of it because they know I am 63, bald, fat and 5'8", but if you have never met me.

Even posting a picture of yourself like Bobover3 and A-1 does, I know I could pick them out of a crowd, Right????
