However, for clarity. Although I would not deny anyone their choice of of appropriate category, classification terminology. P.C. or not.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/oriental

The term "oriental", with connotations of exoticism, 👅 at one time referred to the people, culture, and nations of the Near East. More recently it has been used more to refer generically to the people, culture, and nations of the Far East. Even more recently, in some places it has come to be considered objectionable or offensive, particularly in its noun form. While "the Orient" has become a somewhat dated term, "oriental", particularly as an adjective, still sees frequent use.

One complaint has been its frequent use by some to denigrate Asian people and people of Asian descent, which many feel has given the word itself a bad connotation. Others object to the term being used as a blanket term for people of Asian or East Asian descent, since that ignores the varied and often disparate cultures and histories of that area, thus emphasizing the sameness or indistinguishability of those cultures and peoples (and in reverse, imputing on the user a lack of awareness and concern for the cultural difference within Asia). A third reason given is that the term is so vague that it is never clear which countries are included within the term. Most users, however, do not employ the term with any malicious intent whatsoever, and view it as a convenient and innocent generic term in the absence of more precise information, equivalent to the frequent use of the term westerner in Asia.

Major objections to the term are fairly recent, and so it still sees frequent use, often by people unaware that objections to it exist. As awareness of the cultures in Asia has increased, its usage has decreased. Its occasional replacements, such as "Asian" and "East Asian", can also be seen as offensive by others. It can still be found in the mainstream media, though less frequently than in decades past. When used to describe Asian foods and other products, it raises fewer objections, and this remains one of the most acceptable ways of using the term. The atmosphere of sensitivity surrounding "oriental" suggests that it should be used with caution.

Or should the moderators deliver a ruling on what we call those sorts of gentiles? 😄

Moi

Don't ever call me an Occidental! 😠

moi, don't get confused with the whole "i want it to mean what i mean" thing with the use of oriental. I'm one of those who will adamantly refuse to use a word because of the way it is used, as I've already expressed my views on terms such as "tranny" and "ladyboy" on these forums before.

However, in lieu of saying "Asian" which I am not because a) in UK it refers to people of Indian/Pakistani type ethinicity, b) although my official birthplace is Asia, I do not have any heart or soul for it to consider myself "Asian and in any case, since I wished to refer to my ethinicity, as my avatar picture shows my ethinicity but NOT my regional affiliation or birthplace, and saying "Asian" would be wrong in denoting my ethinicity, what should I say? I can't say East Asian, because I am NOT from East Asia. I would also suggest to use "East Asia" as a replacement for "oriental" is even more offensive since you are suggesting that you think Chinese people can't originate from anywhere else in the world, which is wrong on 2 counts, 1) the Chinese have migrated to all corners of the globe, native Chinese from America or Europe are not uncommon anymore and 2) China stretches from the East to arguably Central Asia, so as the basis for a regional identity, it isn't right to say "Asia" or "East Asia" either.

I would not say chinese because from the picture alone to most, you would not be able to tell if I am Korean, Chinese or Japanese and I wished to refer to my ethinic appearance in a general way to suggest that the moment you see someone of such ethinic appearance with a tray of food you assume it has to be something exotic. That assumption alone, is it not far more connotatively pander to exoticsm than any use of "oriental" can ever be?

And if it is disrespectful to the disparate cultures there, then may I ask you why is "European" not considered equally offensive? Europe is a region of even more disparate cultures, and yet we say "European" without batting an eyelid.

This is not a mindless "I'm allowed to because I belong to this category" use of the word either. I can fully justify its use with strong arguments that do not depend on "reclaiming the word" alone as an argument. Even if I wasn't ethinically oriental I'd still use, and justify its use.

Seriously, my bad. I wasn't thinking. Sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain. Fields is the one who liked kids parboiled.

As regards Dodgson, "Lewis Carroll" was his nom de plume. Just as Mark Twain didn't write Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn but Samuel Langhorne Clemens did. And, for that matter, W. C. Fields was really William Claude Dukenfield. Nothing is what it seems, it seems.

Will this be an animal model for curing gayness? PC 🍑👋 Moi

Will 'Gay' Penguins Reject Reunion?

By Christina Caron <hiss> <hiss> (jilted lady I think) ABC News – 7 hrs ago

"The “gay” penguin cause celebre of 2011 isn’t over just yet. Buddy and Pedro, the two inseparable male birds at the Toronto Zoo whose impending break-up sparked public outcry, will be reunited in the spring. But that doesn’t mean they’ll want to pair up again.

As ABCNews.com reported last week, the two will be split up approximately one week from now for breeding season. Zookeepers want them to breed with females to help populate the species, which is endangered. But when the breeding season is over, all the African penguins will eventually return to the same enclosure, and “if Buddy and Pedro want to be together … they will be back together,” said Tom Mason, Toronto Zoo curator of birds.

But will they want to stay together after copulating and bonding with a female?

Before Buddy arrived at the Toronto Zoo, he paired with a female for “quite a few years,” and they had eggs together, Mason told ABCNews.com.

Buddy, 21, and Pedro, 10, lived in a zoo in Toledo, Ohio, before traveling to Canada to become part of the Toronto Zoo’s first African penguin exhibit in 18 years. Zookeepers quickly observed courtship and mating behaviors that are typically exhibited only between males and females, such as braying at one another, grooming each other, and standing side-by-side.

But if they each pair with a female who produces an egg, that’s a big incentive to stay with their new mates. According to P. Dee Boersma, a biology professor at the University of Washington, penguins usually get “divorced” because they fail to raise young.

“They are much more likely to divorce after a nest failure than if they are successful with their mate,” she says in a video on her website. “Those birds will tend to be faithful.”

The Toronto Zoo’s species survival plan aims to help the endangered penguins populate, but the process can’t be forced. It all depends on how well they “get along” with the female penguins.

Kevin McGowan of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology in Ithaca, N.Y., told ABCNews.com. “The way penguins work is they do get paired for a long time. Basically, the only other penguin they care about is their mate, so it’s important for them to find somebody who’s compatible.”

So if Gay men enter breeding programs they just might . . .

Christmas Story, the one about Ralphie and his BB Gun.

Iconic even to those who didn't have a chance to freeze their tongue to a metal pole.

But,

I wonder, 💡

where did they get the idea of "The Leg Lamp"?

Sure I member all those contests and clippings for rewards.

But, a leg lamp? Did they just make that up like it should a fit for that time or what?

Unfortunately, the commercially available leg lamp is not quite identical to the movie.

Plastic does not shatter and it has a fish net stocking.

Love that movie.

Growing up in rural northern Canada, there were so many elements that reminded me of my own life. Like Ralphie, I had an aunt who sent Christmas gifts for someone considerably younger than my sister or myself. What age she thought we were is questionable.

Like Ralphie, I had a friend who stuck his tongue to a flag-pole.

My dad was very nearly a carbon copy of Ralphie's dad. Although I do not remember my dad bringing home anything as tacky as that lamp.

I got my first BB gun around the same age as Ralphie in that movie. Though I managed to miss my eye, and never shot anyone. Self injuries came from my new Jack-knife, and my VERY brief ownership of a sling-shot. Still... parallels.

Like Ralphie I had a moment in my life that seemed to happen in slow motion. When I first said FUDGE in front of my dad. Only I didn't say fudge. I still have nightmares about that moment.

Classic movie, for so many reasons.

I can remember my brother having a lamp like that, he was 14 years older then me and was married in 1951. Yes I remember it. And the octopus one receptacle and 14 electric cords coming off it, then the fuze blowing, dad cussing, mom putting her hands over my ears, yes, I remember it.

I remember the first time I watched it, I was at talula house, he put it on and went off to bed, left me in the LR and I said I would watch a couple minutes of it and maybe finish it later, I sat on his coffee table, this piece of maple hard wood with my hand reached out to turn it off, I lowered my hand but did not move the 2 ft to the sofa as I could not look away. It was me at that age.

Everybody I have talked to about this movie says the same thing, it hits home. My sister-n-law made my brother move that lamp to the garage.

I wonder 💡

Is it really global warming or is the earth just blushing with a passing fart?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/gi ... 04179.html

". . . Russian scientists have discovered hundreds of plumes of methane (fart) gas, some 1,000 meters in diameter, bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean. . ."

Methane, fart gas, is a greenhouse gas.

Remember, if you fart freely, 🙅 you contribute to global warming.

Do your part, before expecting them to do theirs.

Hold it for colonic re-absorption. Ignite it to lesser greenhouse gases. There are choices.

And wonder 💡 is it really global warming or is the Earth just blushing with a passing fart?

I have a small replica leg lamp. I adore it.

I got a BB gun when I was 11. I was shooting cans off a little table out in the yard with it, and if not for my glasses, I would have shot my eye out!

A BB came back and PING! Right in the left lens. Thank God for bulletproof glass glasses back then! Or at least, they felt that way!

Classic movie. I identify with the kid in so many ways.

Is the day slow here because of "football"?

Trust Moi. Lingerie Football MTV2, Friday, 10PM is much more entertaining.

Chime in Sunday footballers when the games are over.

Out yourselves.
