A vet who placed a dogs testicle in his mouth and tried to get hold of human steroids has been struck off.
James Lockyear demonstrated unprofessional, juvenile, inappropriate, disgusting and offensive behaviour, a disciplinary panel found.
Not only did he put the testicle from a castrated dog in his mouth but he also put a medical tube up his nose and showed a nurse a photo of his erect penis on his mobile phone. The 37-year-old, from Brighton, east Sussex, was charged with two offences by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons while working at St Runwalds Surgery in Colchester, Essex, between April 2008 and September 2009.
In the first, the muscle-bound vet tried to get 12 ampoules of Sustanon, a prescription-only anabolic steroid for humans, the committee heard.
The second charge was for inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour.
Lockyear, originally from South Africa, did not attend the hearing but claimed the drug was to stop his dog getting hip problems. He was found guilty of attempting to obtain medicines dishonestly.
Whilst it was a one-off incident, it is conduct which falls far short of that which is expected of a member of the profession, said committee chair Alison Bruce.
He was also found guilty of a very serious and unpleasant series of misjudgments which were upsetting to his colleagues. Lockyear has been struck off the register but can reapply after ten months.
