Flu Vaccine

Post by Arab Nights (imported) »

Buried in another thread was a subject that I would like to hear people's opinions about. Since it was buried in the other thread, I would like to make it the title to grab more attention. Flu vaccines. Do they make you sick or just immunize you? If they make you sick, is it a low grade thing that you do not pass on and which is part of the process of immunization?

Any takers?

When I worked at a hospital I was assured that the vaccines no longer contain the live virus. Therefore no risk of getting the flu. Of course a few people can be allergic to one or more components of the vaccine. I remember people with allergies to eggs were discouraged from taking the flu shot. Keep in mind this info is several years old but I have never heard of a return to a live virus for a vaccine.

Flu vaccine viruses are grown in eggs - ergo, egg allergies = no flu shot!

With the recent H1N1 virus vaccines, the nasal mist is a live virus vaccine, but the virus is attenuated (means weakened) so that it does not cause flu

The injectable H1N1 vaccine is not live virus. When it becomes available, I will likely get this shot. Living with a nurse that brings everything (viral) in the ER home, one must take action at times.

In the interest of full disclosure - I am just getting over a nasty H1N1 infection, so, I am a little touchy about the vaccine availability issue. --FLO--

Most vaccines are dead viruses to stimulate the production of antbodies; they don't always work. A few like the swine flu and Sabin polio vaccine contain mutated viruses, so there is the potential (very small) that the virus can mutate again and return to lethality.

Because of my asthma they always give me flu shots; I always get sick for a few days after, but I don't get the flu when I'm sick; I think its a reaction to the vaccine.

The smallpox vaccine is a cowpox virus related to smallpox, chickenpox and herpes; the family relationship is so close that immunity from cowpox confers immunity to smallpox, but some allergic people, any form of the virus family is deadly.

My great uncle, my grandma's brother, just died of pneumonia from swine flu on Wednesday, so sometimes just rest and chicken soup isn't enough. I'm glad Flo is better.

.

Went to the public clinic the other day for a refill of my hypertension meds and the Doctor had me get the H1N1 vaccine, but since they were out of the injections they gave me the nasal spray....my nose felt runny the rest of the day.
