Penile tissue replaced successfully in experiments
Hey, with modern science penectomy may become reversible!
I think the real money from this advancement will be in penis enlargement.

Penis tissue replaced in the lab
Rabbit
The work was carried out on rabbits
Tissue created in a laboratory has been used to completely replace the erectile tissue of the penis in animals.
The advance raises hopes of being able to restore full function to human penises that have been damaged by injury or disease.
Rabbits given the engineered tissue by the scientists from Wake Forest University in North Carolina had normal sexual function and produced offspring.
The study appears online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Professor Anthony Atala said: "Further studies are required, of course, but our results are encouraging and suggest that the technology has considerable potential for patients who need penile reconstruction.
"Our hope is that patients with congenital abnormalities, penile cancer, traumatic injury and some cases of erectile dysfunction will benefit from this technology in the future."
Reconstructing damaged or diseased penile erectile tissue is a tough challenge because of the tissue's complex structure and function.
ENGINEERED TISSUE
Known as the corpora cavernosa penis
Two columns of sponge-like material, forming a significant part of the organ
The structures, bound together with connective tissue and covered with skin, fill with blood during an erection
Different approaches have been tried - including the use of silicone prosthesis - but with limited success.
The Wake Forest team has already achieved considerable success in the field of tissue engineering, developing whole human bladders that have been implanted into patients.
In a previous study, the researchers engineered short segments of rabbit erectile tissue with 50% of full function.
In the latest work, they harvested smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells from the animals' erectile tissue.
These cells were multiplied in the laboratory and used to seed a three dimensional scaffold, which was implanted into the animals' penis.
Organised erectile tissue with blood vessel structures began to form as early as a month later.
The researchers believe the key was the fact that the cells were injected into the scaffolds on two separate days, enabling them to hold almost six times as many smooth muscle cells as in previous studies.
Tissue engineering techniques may well lead to clinical advances with time

During an erection, it is the relaxation of smooth muscle tissue that allows an influx of blood into the penis.
The relaxation is triggered by the release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells.
Tests showed that vessel pressure within the engineered tissue was normal and that blood flowed smoothly through it and drained away from it normally after an erection.
When the animals with the engineered tissue mated with females, vaginal swabs contained sperm in eight out of 12 cases. Four of the 12 females were impregnated.
Tim Terry, honorary secretary of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, described the study as "fascinating".
He said complex, highly invasive surgery was often the only option for patients with damaged erectile tissue and the latest work offered long-term hope of a better alternative.
However, he said, much work would be required before the technique could be tested on humans, with potential problems including finding a suitable place to embed the new tissue and ensuring it had an appropriate nerve supply.
"Nevertheless, tissue engineering techniques may well lead to clinical advances with time," he said.

Re: Penile tissue replaced successfully in experiments
Well how long will they be able to make these new penises and who gets to decide how long it will be? If the average size penis is approximately 6 inches, will doctors be persuaded to give a man a penis double that size? What will the insurance companies pay for, so much an inch? What a fun dilemma.
Personally, I think some bright person will figure out how to make the penis grow longer and bigger. It seems inevitable to me. I say that because just a short while ago, impotence was a hard problem to crack, but they cracked it and someone will figure out how to actually grow a better and bigger penis without surgery. Maybe it'll be a shot of something or maybe it'll be a compounded cream of some type that makes tissue grow. I'm waiting.

I'm waiting 'til some of the penectomy wannabes can realize their fantasies and have it lopped off and then grow a new one. That'll change the whole complexion of this forum.

Re: Penile tissue replaced successfully in experiments
When scientists finally figure out how to regrow human appendages, like the male penis, with a simple shot of something, I believe penis amputation will become a fad that will see thousands of men doing it, some behind closed doors and some in public. The question that will need to be answered is, "How fast will it regrow." If they can get a penis to regrow in several weeks, instead of months, that might determine the number of men who do it.
On the other hand, will women resort to trimming off the male member to slow or stop promiscuity, even for a short time? I think that some women might actually take advantage of men and enjoy lopping off the male penis. Penis envy no more. Then women might have sex with their men, and afterward remove their penises, that way their men wouldn't be able to stray, they'd only have sex once a month. Of course if they do stray, then those women might also lop off the male member for a keep sake. Crazy stuff.
Then there's the problem of what to do with the decapitated penis. I hesitate to think, but I wouldn't be surprised at what people would do with them. I can see them being advertised, "real human penises for sale!" Of course you might be asked to sell yours since it will grow back. What a can of worms!

And then there's the clitoris. -Made out of the same tissue. Need I say any more?

And if it becomes possible to grow a whole new cock when the old one is cut off, what would stop a guy from simply bisecting his cock, and letting each half regrow into a complete unit? The race would be on, with guys who would soon have a forest of cocks sprouting from their groin while other guys would simply be splitting the glans until their cock had so many heads it would begin to resemble a sprout of broccoli. Where would the line be drawn, at being an octocock? Octobrococock?
I started writing something along this idea, but never got back to it to finish it, with the premise of an injection that allowed a cock to be regrow, if you got a shot within 12 hours, but the failure rate was about 2 percent, which made it something of a gamble to do the chop and the odds get progressively worse with each time you make the cut. Maybe I'll go back and see if I can figure out and ending for it so I can post it.
