Testosterone shots - 7 Foot Football

Post by Hash (imported) »

Can anyone explain why this kid is getting testosterone shots to stop his growth.

"Doctors have been giving Adams testosterone shots over the last several years to stop his growth. They appear to be working; he hasn't grown in the last six months."

Testosterone causes the long bones of the arms and legs to stop growing. Hence the tall, reedy (macroskeletal) look of some eunuchs in history.

Does that mean they give him an excessive amount of testosterone or does that mean that his testosterone was low to begin with? Why didn't they do this sooner? If they're giving him shots of testosterone, what's going to happen to his testicles?

I don't think that's the reason. As I understand it, one of the differences between adult and child is the amount of testosterone in the body. (When I re-read this, it doesn't make any sense to me...)

However,

Boys grow only as long as the body considers itself a child. Some bodies can be children as late as 21 or 22 or possibly 23 years old. The growth is imperceptible to our eyes but not insignificant to the body. There are bone tumors that are always cancer in adults that are not cancer in children. Orthopedic surgeons deal with this fact. Thus finding that type of bone tumor on a 16 year old, the prognosis is always benign. Finding it in a 25 year old the prognosis is cancer. Finding it at 20, is up to what the body thinks it is...

Many bodybuilders are short in stature because they took testosterone or anabolic steroids early. They gained muscle but the extra testosterone signalled the large bones that the body was now adult and that they should only grow if broken. Thus these boys remain at the same height and do not grow.

And a doctor implemented course of anabolic steroids (testosterone) does not produce sterility or harm the testicles. So this kid is OK in that regard. He's got other health problems due to whatever genetic condition is acting on his body.

I've heard about this before. Actually trying to stunt growth because someone was getting too tall. It probably won't take much testosterone to do it, maybe 200mg/wk. At least that's the dose I have heard used by doctors to stunt growth in excessively tall boys.

Interesting thought: I wonder if this could be one of the reasons why kids have been getting taller in recent years? I've heard some studies that say the overall Testosterone level of everyone has gone down in modern times.

I thought that both estrogen or testosterone stopped long bone growth?

Its the estrogen that has more effect that testosterone in stopping growth. By giving testosterone shots the level of both hormone raise and preventing any feminization. Gynecomastia is a side effect of taking testosterone.
