I have no evidence that this practice still happens but I know that it used to happen. My latest story 'Holy Orders' is actually based on fact, although not in the setting in which I've, for literary reasons, presented it.

While I would never make a claim for the NONEXISTENCE of anything (someone would be bound to prove me wrong), this is one activity that seems to have disappeared into the nightmares of the past. Someone may come up with a recent case of a religious fanatic, but I certainly haven't found one. There are, however, certainly enough documentary records of castration used to prevent masturbation among young men, but all of them seem to be fairly old.

Well into the early years of the 20th century, masturbation was supposed to have such dire consequences on the individual that severe measures were taken to prevent it. There have been posts on the Archive of mechanical and electrical devices to prevent masturbation. Most of them causing severe pain. Boys caught masturbating were sometimes circumcised without anesthesia to "cure" them of the practice. In fact, the primary reason for the practice of infant circumcision in the English-speaking world, which only became common toward the end of the 19th century, was to prevent the boys from future masturbation. Sometimes castration was resorted to when all else failed. Castration being seen as LESS harmful to the individual than his continued masturbation?!?

Dr. Everett Flood, in his article, "Notes on the Castration of Idiot Children" (American Journal of Psychology, vol. 10 (1899), pp. 296-301), describes the castration of twenty-four boys (thirteen of them aged fourteen or younger) in order to prevent their chronic masturbation. He notes that the procedure was totally successful in all but one of the cases--the one continued to masturbate occasionally. As a result of the successful therapeutic outcome of their castrations, six of the boys could even be released from the Michigan Home for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic into the care of their families. All that kept these six boys in a mental institution was their practice of masturbation.

In 1921 Theophilus Painter first counted the number of human chromosomes using thin slices from the testicles of three men who had been castrated in Texas state prisons for excessive masturbation. He got the number wrong, but, although the experiment was repeated by other scientists, his error was not corrected until 1955.

I probably have at least a dozen other historic examples of castration to prevent masturbation buried in my Þles, but these two were the Þrst that I pulled out.
