I recommend that you use two hard drives.
One drive for your operating system and the other for your data. This way you loose very little data when your OS drive has a problem (and its the main culprit in the trouble marker category)
Of course you need to back up your data! However with Terra byte drives and only Gig byte DVD's backing up becomes problematic.

I am now using Windows 7 and 6 megs download speed. Seems incredible from just this morning with Windows 98 and dial-up. Lots to discover about the new system.
