Story Comments - Nathan's thoughts

Post by Nathan (imported) »

Guys,

I haven't written any stories for a while, partly because I've been busy with life, and partly because when something does get posted here it is has become rare for any discussion to follow or even any recognition to be given.

Still, sometimes it's fun to write, and so, with some extra time I decided the other day on a whim, to post "Castrated for a Fuck!". As stories go, it's OK, but perhaps not my best work. But I wanted to do something different, something that in theory could be "possible" and something that would most likely elicit a response from at least a few readers. As it was, it turned out that it probably took me about ten days to write, work, and rework the story-line until it reached its final form.

Now, when I write I don't really expect a lot of feedback, partly because the only way a reader can provide it is to click through multiple links to finally get to the place on this board where comments can be posted. Few do that, and since it's a little difficult to just post something without leaving at least an email address as a trail, or "signing in", etc, I think even fewer are willing. Perhaps we as readers don't really want to admit to what we are reading, and in most cases, getting turned on by. Still, it wasn't that long ago that if you wanted to read an erotic story, especially one with a castration theme, you had to buy some book in a sleazy store. Now, you can find the fantasy with a click of a mouse, and thanks to this archive, it won't cost you anything and nobody will know. Still, the truth is the ONLY reason you can do that is there are people willing to write the stuff you want to read.

For this story I have received a total of 4 comments to date. Most are a short "thanks", but this one came today and I found it somewhat upsetting: "...Nathan; I just read "Castrated for a Fuck". You are very sick. You should seek professional psychiatric help immediately.---Joe Roberts"

Now, needless to say, that's not exactly the kind of comment that makes me want to go right out and write another castration story. I don't know who "Joe Roberts" is and I don't even care, and I'm not even upset that he didn't like my work. But if I put in 10 days of effort to produce a story on this archive, and that is the kind of "payment" I receive for doing it, I'm not too inclined to want to spend a lot of time writing more.

So, my point here is that I'd like to suggest that we all try and do a few things to help this website out. While the stories aren't the totality of the site, they are a big part of it, and for most of the readers I think the stories certainly are one of the big reasons we click on here occasionally to see what's "new." So, knowing that, it would probably be helpful if the New Stories that show on the home page showed the author too; because certain authors catch your eye and you KNOW you want to read them. And, of course, there are other authors that we might want to avoid. I'm sure "Joe Roberts" would like to avoid a "Nathan" story in the future!

Another thing we could do if we want authors to continue to write to the archive is to take the small bit of time and effort it takes to write the authors of the stories you enjoy and share your thoughts with them. I can tell everyone that from my perspective, most authors are much more likely to write additional work when they feel their stuff is being read and enjoyed by others.

Sadly, the truth is that if the only people that write and the only comments we writers receive are from guys like this "Joe Roberts", then the authors are going to be a lot less motivated to post stuff. That's just the way it is.

My question is, what's Joe doing on EA in the first place?

Just My opinion, but I'd like to see you do some fantasy castrations.

monsters of antiquity, Centaurs, Minotaurs, Pegasi, and of course, Unicorns.

(think of a Cyclops with one eye, and now no balls)

you might even try the Furry angle...

There's been others who've tried these themes, but have fallen flat on their keyboards. I am tempted to post a cleaned up log me and a friend have done together, but I don't know where to start.

Old thread, but still relevant.

Trolls, which is what this comment maker are, are just a part of the Internet. The best thing you can do is ignore them.

Nathan, You are.... The MOST wonderful writer here. Some of your stories have reached out and used as illustrations on Damn1. My favorite is Five for the Knife. I will still JO to it even though I know almost ever written word in it. It is so complete that I wish there could be was a sequel months later but it is so perfect along with your others. We miss your new work here. NC

I'm afraid that there will always be guys like "Joe Roberts", but I hope you still will remember our correspondence about your stories and things I like and have experienced. It was a pity that our real live meeting didn't take place.

A "Critic" is a man who creates nothing and thereby feels qualified to judge the work of creative men. There is logic in this; he is unbiased-he hates all creative people equally.

Robert Heinlein Time Enough for Love

This quote came to mind, anybody who writes no mater what will always find those that don't like his work, but the truth of the matter most people stop reading anything the minute they get out of school. Those of us that are left are few and those that write are very few. Don't let the "Joe Roberts" of the world stop you, they could not write a short story on any subject ever, even if there life depended on it.

Hi Nathan

Just like you I often wish I'd get more feedback from reader. Unlike you I've yet to receive any really angry messages.

But please know that there are many of us who really appreciate the time and effort you put into your writing. And as for me let me say, Thank you for a job well done.

It's been the general consensus over the years that a simple thread here with "I read it, I liked it," or even "it could use this..." is the quickest, most simple form of feedback. That, or in an email, if a valid one is available in the story. It doesn't take much.

Sadly, we hardly get that...

Over the years, several stories here on my end have gone into cyber-la-la-land when I was done reading them after I wrote them. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that hardly anyone cares, fewer will say so.

Although I did pull off a magnum opus, writing under another name, with a Harry Potter fanfic that got me "asked to leave (or we'll boot you)" from that "site which must not be named."
