I don't get how this is even possible. If you have data on a region of your harddrive. And then you go over that place replacing all the ones and zeros that is the data with a random pattern thereof(ones and zeros). How does the overwritten data survive?

I've never had a problem with XP myself. I had Xp installed for two year or was it one(?), and the only time I had to install it again was when I installed XP with SP2 preinstalled -- I figured that would be more stable/secure then installing SP2 _afterwards_ as an afterthought.
